Swaran Chandan was an expatriate Punjabi story writer, novelist, poet, and editor. He was born on 2 September 1941 in Amritsar to mother Harnam Kaur and father Asa Singh. Swaran Chandan obtained a B.Sc. in Agriculture, an M.A. in Punjabi, and a Ph.D. In addition, he earned an A.L. (Librarianship) degree from London. Based on this education, he moved to and settled in the United Kingdom and adopted his career as a librarian in Middlesex.
Swaran Chandan, in his writings, has articulated with great depth the mentality of Punjabis who go abroad in search of livelihood. In his stories, novels, and poems, he has very intensely felt the displacement of his people away from their soil and the fear of losing their identity in a foreign culture, and has expressed these issues with a subtle method. He published poetry collections such as 'Chanan Di Lakeer', 'Dusra Pada', 'Jugnuan Di Rakh', and 'Kahikashan Di Talash' etc. In addition to this, he has written about thirty works including story collections, novels, autobiography, travelogues, and more. Swaran Chandan also performed editorial work for the British Punjabi Story special issue of Rachna magazine, the monthly magazine Suraj, Literary Suraj, Delhi, and the bi-monthly magazine 'Pravachan'.
Swaran Chandan received several awards for his literary contribution, among which are the Bhai Mohan Singh Vaid Literary Award and the Shromani Punjabi Sahitkar (Foreign) Honour, awarded by the Punjab Language Department, Government. Swaran Chandan is counted among the important literary figures of expatriate Punjabi literature. Through his literature, he gave a documentary and artistic form to the dreams, difficulties, and displacement of people living abroad.
Dr. Swaran Chandan died of a heart attack on 7 December 2011 at the age of seventy. Throughout his journey, he worked successfully as a critic, story writer, novelist, poet, and literary figure.
