Sher Singh Sandal was born in 1893 in village Takhtupura, tehsil Moga, district Faridkot, to Khazan Singh and Sobhi. “Sandal” was his pen name. He received his early education at the dera in Takhtupura. At the age of about twenty, in 1913, he accepted Sant Hari Singh of Takhtupura as his poetic mentor and received training in prosody. He studied important Punjabi prosodic texts such as Rupdeep, Gun Satar, Gan Sangrah, and Gurmat Prabhakar. The renowned kaviishar Dharm Singh Daudhar was his gurbhai, and Natha Singh “Bhuriwala,” a well-known poet of Malwa, was his close relative.
His first marriage was to Sahib Kaur in 1913 at Kangar, but as they had no children, he married Gurdev Kaur in 1935. From this marriage, he had one son and three daughters. He passed away at Takhtupura on 7 April 1976 at the age of 83.
Sher Singh Sandal performed kaviishri for sixty years and remained associated with many fellow performers, including Mohan Singh Dala, Basant Singh, Bhai Roopa, Bant Singh Takhtupura, Dhanna Singh Dhurkot, Tahliwala, Surain Singh, and Lehna. In addition to Punjab, he also staged kaviishri performances across India and abroad, including Singapore, Malaya, and Burma. He became especially known for promoting Gurmat thought through kaviishri.
