Deepak Jaitoi was a famous and prominent ghazal writer and lyricist of the Punjabi language, who is also known by the name Baba-e-Ghazal. Deepak Jaitoi was born on April 18, 1925 A.D. to father Inder Singh and mother Veer Kaur in Jaito. His real name was Gurcharan Singh, and he adopted the literary name Deepak Jaitoi. The pen name 'Jaitoi' was taken from the city of Jaito. The spark of poetry awakened in Deepak Jaitoi from a young age, and while studying in the third grade, he wrote a letter to a friend which was in the form of a poem. That letter marks the beginning of his poetry. After that, to understand the intricacies of poetry, Deepak Jaitoi adopted Mujrim Dasuhi as his mentor.

Deepak Jaitoi made a significant contribution to establishing Punjabi ghazal in the mainstream. The master poet who helped Punjabi ghazal gain acceptance and prestige, Deepak Jaitoi, made valuable contributions not only to ghazals but also to the fields of songs, poetic dramas, epics, plays, and translation. More than a dozen of his books have been published, among which notable works include *Mala Kyon Bani Talwar* (epic), *Ghazal Di Khushboo*, *Ghazal Da Ada*, *Deepak Di Lo*, *Meriya Chonviyan Ghazlan*, *Ghazal Da Bankpan*, *Bhartri Hari* (poetic drama), *Bhulekha Pa Gaya* (short story collection), *Samaan Zaroor Aawega* (play), *Sikandar Gupta* (translated work), and others.

While Deepak Jaitoi made an important contribution to the literary field, he was also a top-class lyricist. His songs were recorded in the melodious voice of Narender Biba. Songs like *Aa Le Mae Saabh Kunjiaan Dhiyan Kar Challiye Sardari*, *Gall Soch Ke Karin Tu Zaildaraan Ve Assan Nin Kanor Jhalli*, *Jutti Lagdi Haniyan Mere Ve Putt Na Pulaaghaan Lamiaan*, and many others have become popular on the tongue like folk songs. In addition, his written religious songs *Saka Chandni Chowk* and *Guru Nanak Diyan Sakhian* were also recorded by the famous company HMV.

Deepak Jaitoi's greatest distinction was that he established the Deepak Ghazal School, where he would teach the subtleties, metaphors, nuances, and rules of prosody of ghazal to his disciples daily for long hours. Through this school, he trained around 350 disciples, which include names like Amarjit Sandhu, D.R. Dhawan, Gurdial Roshan, and Lala Firozepuri.

Deepak Jaitoi, who dedicated his life to the Punjabi language and ghazal, was honored and respected by every major literary institution of Punjab and Haryana. He was honored with awards like the Shromani Punjabi Kavi Samman, Dr. Sadhu Singh Hamdard Award, Kartar Singh Dhaliwal Award, Baba-e-Ghazal Award, Mir Taqi Mir Award, and many other literary awards.

Deepak Jaitoi lived his life like an ascetic but kept his passions alive. Although he faced hardships and bitterness in his life, he never let his self-respect, honor, and dignity be hurt. He was a close friend of the country's former Prime Minister, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and they often participated together in poetic gatherings. This sun of Punjabi ghazal set forever on February 12, 2005.
